In 1977, in a letter to a friend, DeWitt recounted the harrowing story of an almost-failed attempt to recreate their feat. General Van Deusen, head of R&D, brought in two outsiders from the Radiation Laboratory, George E. Valley, Jr. and Donald G. Fink, to observe a moonrise test of the system, to be carried out under the direction of King Stodola. Signals were sent, but this time no echo was heard in response:
